The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) describes language ability on six levels, from A1 (beginner) to C2 (proficient). Schools, employers and universities use it because it describes what you can do with a language, not just how much grammar you know.
| Level | Name | In practice |
|---|---|---|
| A1 | Breakthrough | You can introduce yourself and handle very simple, predictable exchanges. |
| A2 | Waystage | You can manage routine tasks — shopping, directions, simple work exchanges. |
| B1 | Threshold | You can deal with most situations while travelling and talk about familiar topics with some confidence. |
| B2 | Vantage | You can take part in discussions, defend an opinion and work in English with some effort. |
| C1 | Effective operational proficiency | You can use English flexibly for study and work, with only occasional difficulty. |
| C2 | Mastery | You can understand virtually everything and express yourself precisely and naturally. |
Many learners have uneven profiles: reading at B2 but speaking at B1, for example. A good assessment reports your level by skill, not just one overall letter. That is why our free online test gives an indicative level, and the trial lesson checks speaking and listening directly.
There is no single answer. It depends on your starting level, how often you study, how much you use English outside lessons and your goals. Moving between the higher levels (B2 to C1, for example) usually takes longer than moving between the lower ones, because the differences become more subtle — precision, range and style rather than basic structures.
What reliably helps:
The CEFR is a framework, not an exam. An official certificate comes from a recognised test such as IELTS, TOEIC or Cambridge English, each of which reports results that can be related to CEFR levels.
